Janina Janke is a researching artist, theater director, stage designer and lives in Berlin. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, she studied European ethnology and philosophy in Munich, and then stage design at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2006 she co-founded the transdisciplinary formation Oper Dynamo West to develop contemporary music theater in urban spaces. Since then her work consistently takes place in dialogue with particular buildings and spaces in Berlin and internationally, such as the Zoologischer Bahnhof Berlin, Le Corbusier’s Unités d’habitation in Berlin and Marseille, and the UN headquarters in Vienna, Nairobi, New York City, and Geneva. She conceives and realizes spatial interventions, experimental stagings, and artistic research – all at the intersection of art, theater, architecture, music, and science. She is a member of the performance collective Turbo Pascal, which is known and awarded for its interactive performances and participatory theater projects. Janina Janke teaches at art schools or in other institutional contexts and works as a curator.
